Treasured Moments
Mervyn Himbury

1.  Principal Emeritus Mervyn Himbury was a very influential figure in the recent life of the church. With Marion, he worshipped with us for ~10 years until his death in 2008. Mervyn was well-known for his preaching and his love of preaching.


In 2004 the church held a reunion, attended by over 100 past members and friends, at which Mervyn gave the message “Morning will come” and challenged us to continue working to be the church of Jesus Christ in Moreland.


Here is a short sample of Mervyn preaching that message.

2.  The 2004 Church Reunion was a wonderful time of catching up with hundreds of people who formed the West Moreland and West Coburg Baptist communities over many years.

3.  The Church began its life as the West Moreland Baptist Church, which was officially opened Saturday 28 January 1922. You can read the report in The Argus, 31 January 1922, courtesy of the National Library of Australia.


“The West Moreland Baptist Church was officially opened on Saturday, the ceremony of turning the key being performed by the Rev. E. P. Rees, president of the Baptist Union of Victoria. Among those who  attended

were the Rev. W. M. Cartwright, superintendent of the Baptist Home Missions; the Rev L. E. Tranter, general secretary of the Baptist Union; Mr. W. H. G.  Ellingworth, chairman of the Home Missionary Society; the Rev. S. E. Tuckwell, and pastors Rev. J. Worboys of Brunswick, and Rev. H. Horsfall, of Coburg.”
